The first cold morning of the season, you kick the heat on and the house smells like something's burning. Nine times out of ten it's harmless. The tenth time is a house fire waiting to happen — and the difference is easy to identify if you know what you're smelling.
Normal: dusty, hot-metal smell for 20-30 minutes
Dust settles on the heat exchanger all summer. The first burn of the season cooks it off. It should fade within half an hour and never come back that season. Open a couple windows and let it clear.
Not normal: burning plastic, fish, or electrical odor
- Melting plastic: overheating blower motor, wire insulation, or a foreign object in the ducts
- Fishy or urine-like: overheating electrical components or a failing capacitor
- Acrid/ozone smell: arcing in the control board or a shorted wire
- Rotten egg: gas leak — leave the house and call PG&E, then us
What to do right now
Shut the system off at the thermostat and the breaker. Don't run it "just to test it again." Call for a diagnostic — a burning-smell call is a same-day priority for us, 24/7.
The cracked heat exchanger question
A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide, which has no smell at all. If your furnace is 15+ years old and smells odd, ask for a combustion analysis and CO test — not just a visual look. Every Sacramento home with a gas furnace should have a working CO detector on each floor.
